EXPERIENCE OF USING BLOG

6th POSTING: EXPERIENCE ON USING BLOG

First of all I would like to thank both my lectures Mdm. Zaini and Datin Norizan to introduced Blog to us through this entire course. HAPPY!… I learned how to blogging.

Yes, blogging activity had improved my writing skills. Every week I required doing new postings. So, before I do my posting I will do my first draft which I will write it in a piece of paper first. While writing the first draft of my posting I applied some writing tips which I learned in my written communication class. After I did my first draft, I will analyze it to find any mistakes. If don’t have any mistakes means, then only I will post my posting. Here I would like to say that blogging activity not only improves my writing skills but also I get a chance to access internet to find information about the topic or posting that I required to do. By this, I had improved my IT skills.

In my opinion, I feel that blog is a useful learning experience for me because it encourages me to access information via internet. Even though, I find it is difficult for me to do blog but it does effective in improving my skills in IT because I’m not really good in that. Furthermore, by doing blogging activity also I learned how to find information using online databases which is e-journal. It helps me to find information for my 3rd posting which I assigned to access information or raw facts from e-journals such as SCOPUS, EBSCO, GEMA, NSTP e-media and so on at Tun Sri Lanang library. This is something very new for me which I never done before and it is very informative.

First of all, before complete the blogging activity I do read all the announcements that is uploaded by my lecturers in my portal. After that, I will read the instructions given by my lecturers about the posting that I should post in that particular week. And of course, I need to understand the instructions given because that is the guidance for me to do the posting successfully.

The problem that I face when using blog is my skills in IT. I’m not really good in that and I’m lack of IT skills. But, still I managed to solve this problem by asking my friends who is really good in IT. Besides that, another problem that I faced is lack of time. I find difficulties to spend more time to search information from internet for my postings. Maybe after this, I won’t face this kind of problems because I had learned how to manage these problems.

Of course, I will tell my friends about this. In fact, most of my friends also don’t really know about this. So, after I tell about this to them they also feel that blogging is an interesting activity. Moreover, my friends those have diary writing habits was so excited and they plan to write online diary. Sure, I will recommend to them because it is very enjoyable and at the same time it also very informative.

Sure, I will continue using blog to put up all the activities that I do and also any informative news, article and so on. Blog is an online memory book which I can view it by online anytime, anywhere and its comes with me everywhere I go. I’m going to complete this SKBP course but my experience and the knowledge that I learned through this course will never come to end, thank to my lectures again! THANK YOU!

CONCORDANCE

4th POSTING: CONCORDANCE

Here comes my fourth posting the task that my lecturer has given me is based “Beyond Concordance Lines: Using Concordances to Investigate Language Development” from our OTL book (page 70) by Arshad Abdul Samad from University Putra Malaysia. After read this article we have to write the gist of the discussion and the summary of the article so this I have to do as a pair work. As a pair work Sharon and I work on it.

The article is mainly about an investigates language development based on data in EMAS corpus using language production as well as lexical variety as indicators of development. What is concordance actually mean? As I know concordance is a row of a certain word listed. The listing of certain word make easier for us to identify coz it only list the word we want only. Now let’s come back to the article according to (Woo lard 2000) the language corpus has commonly been used as the basis of dictionaries and teaching materials. Besides that it has the easy availability of concordance software such as Wordsmith, MonoConc Pro and Micro concord. Moreover it helps in the tedious task of analyzing language data and greatly extends the potential of a corpus in language pedagogy. Teachers, researchers and even language learners examine concordance lines to discover how words and grammatical constructions are used.

Regarding to Schmitt (2002:34) argue that rather than using a corpus in language teaching and learning is that it may help students to “look at the systematicity of language as an interesting linguistic puzzle, a new software such as RANGE, which have been developed by practitioners in linguistics has provided an additional perspective to corpus studies (Nation,2002).

Concordance also helps students to make indexes and word lists, count word frequencies, analyze keywords, compare different usage of a word, find phrases and idioms, publish to the web-see the web and so on. There many advantages of using these software. It is might help students to look at the system of language. Concordance is mainly for those who really need to study texts closely or analyze language.

Concordance also can be used and apply in language teaching and learning, data mining and data clean-up, literary work and linguistic, translation, corpus linguistics and content analysis.

Here is the application of concordance in translation. For further information view:

PoNgGaL CeLeBrAtiOn......(Harvest Festival)

Hi friends.......last 17 February our Indian Cultural Society of Kolej Pendeta Zaba (the place where I stay at UKM now) celebrated Ponggal Festival (Harvest Festival). The theme of the festival is "Zaba Varnangal" which means "Colors of Zaba".
Ponggal is a four days long harvest festival celebrated by Indian community. The first day is celebrated as ‘Bhogi’ festival. Homage is paid to Lord Indra for the abundance of harvest, thereby bringing plenty and prosperity to the land. Therefore, useless houseold articles are thrown into a fire made of wood and cow-dung cakes. On the second day of ponggal celebration, ‘Thai Ponggal’ is celebrated by boiling fresh milk early in the morning and allowing it to boil over the vessel is a tradition that is the literal translation for ponggal and a special dish is cooked which is called ‘Sarkkarai Ponggal’. The special dish is offered to the Sun God with sugarcane sticks. The third day of ponggal is dedicated to cattle and is called ‘Mattu Ponggal’. For instance, multi-colored beads, tinkling bells, sheaves of corn and flower garlands are tied around the neck of the cattle. Thus, ‘Mattu Ponggal’ is days when cattle are given a well deserved day of rest and are given pride of place. Therefore, the farmers honor their cattle friends by celebrating it as a day of thanks giving to them. The fourth day is termed as ‘Kaanum Ponggal’. It is dedicated to the sun god, Surya and has its roots in ancient ‘Brahminical’ tradition because without the Sun, harvests will not be plentiful. This is because the Sun is the symbol of life on earth.

ONLINE DATABASES

3RD POSTING : THE IMPACT OF ICT ON SOCIETY

Hi guys…..Now, I come up again with more information in my third posting which we were assigned to go to Tun Sri Lanang (PTSL) and get information from online databases hosted at the Tun Sri Lanang Library. We were given five topics which we should choose one of it and find information about it from online databases such as EBSCO host, GEMA, LISA Net, NSTP e-media and SCOPUS. I went to Tun Sri Lanang Library and find information for the topic that I choose from online databases such as SCOPUS, EBSHOST and so on. The topic that I choose to find information from online databases is “The Impact of Using ICT on society”.
First and foremost, I would like to define my topic that is “The impact of using ICT on society”. The word “ICT” actually stands for “INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY”.
There are several advantages of ICT on society which provides online services such as online transactions, online shopping and online banking. At the same time, ICT gives great impacts on society such as employment issues, increased leisure time, changing working patterns, security and privacy of data, health and safety issues.
Firstly, I would like to explain about the positive impacts of ICT on society before I move on to the negative impact of ICT on society. ICT provides online services to society which we can use the Internet in many ways. It is very useful for finding out information. Therefore, there are different types of online services such as online transactions, online shopping and online banking.
Online transactions are now available in many ways. For an example, at local government level in the UK, people can pay their council tax, parking fines and many more items. There are other services which can be paid for at national level, such as car tax. Some of these services require payment online, such as applying for a tax disc online, booking a practical test online and so on. Many banking services called card payment gateway systems are now available.
Secondly, ICT also provides society to do online shopping which they no need to go out for shopping and spend more time on it. The first instance of companies allowing their customers to purchase products using the Internet is Pizza Hut which offered customers to order pizzas on its web page. An online can be called by other names such as Internet shop, web shop or online store. It is an electronic commerce (e-commerce) application that business can use with each other or they can offer services or goods directly to customer. Online shopping has become very popular for many reasons such as items are usually cheaper online, customers can compare products, customer can shop at a convenient time for them and so on.
Lastly, many customers are using online banking because of the convenience of banking at any time of day and the reduced amount of the time and fuel costs incurred when travelling to and from the bank. Online banking usually offers such features as up-to-date bank statements, bill payment, transfer of funds between the customer’s different accounts and loan applications.
Let’s move on to the negative impact of ICT on society. Firstly, let’s look at the employment issues. The introduction of online services has had two effects on employment. Some staff has lost their jobs because the use of ICT has replaced the need for some types of worker, for an example shop assistants and bank clerks. However, the other effect has been an increase in the need for workers in more technical aspects of work. There are many areas where the use of ICT in the fields of business and commerce has generally caused unemployment. For instance, many car workers have lost their jobs when car manufacturing companies have introduced the use of robots into factories.
Another impact of ICT on society is increased leisure time. The effect of the use of online services is to allow the possibility of workers working fewer hours. Many people think that the increased use of online services has caused a reduction in the number of hours employees are required to work. However, there is evidence to suggest that the use of ICT has not provided more leisure time.
Further more, the impact of ICT on society changing working patterns. ICT developments including the increased use of online services, has increased the amount of flexible working that organizations can offer their workers. Flexible working is any working pattern that can be decided by the employee and is not normal ‘8 to 5’ routine. In this selection, we will be looking at different types of flexible working such as part-time working, job sharing, flexible working hours, working from home and many more.
Apart from that, another impact of ICT on society is the security and privacy of data. When we talk about the confidentiality of personal data we mean that information should only seen by those people who are authorized to see it. Encryption is the main ICT technique used to ensure the confidentiality of data in online systems. To read an encrypted file requires a secret key or password that enables the person to decrypt it. Many banking systems do not consider that the use of a single password provides sufficient protection against the interception of data by hackers.
Lastly, ICT brings impact on society’s health and safety issues. In case of health, ICT will increase in repetitive strain injury. It is felt that the increased use of online services many have an effect on the degree of repetitive strain injury (RSI) that computer users will experience. The two most common RSI ailments experienced by computer users are Carpal tunnel syndrome, the name given to a condition causing pain in the forearm and wrist which affects women more than men. In case of safety, many safety problems are caused by the use of a large number of computers close to each other, as is particularly the case at online centers. This leads to a need for increased safety measures, against electrocution, fire and other dangers.
As a conclusion, the ICT has become very common nowadays. It brings both negative and positive impacts. For further information about the impact of using ICT on society access the following web sites. Thank you.
