PoNgGaL CeLeBrAtiOn......(Harvest Festival)

Hi friends.......last 17 February our Indian Cultural Society of Kolej Pendeta Zaba (the place where I stay at UKM now) celebrated Ponggal Festival (Harvest Festival). The theme of the festival is "Zaba Varnangal" which means "Colors of Zaba".
Ponggal is a four days long harvest festival celebrated by Indian community. The first day is celebrated as ‘Bhogi’ festival. Homage is paid to Lord Indra for the abundance of harvest, thereby bringing plenty and prosperity to the land. Therefore, useless houseold articles are thrown into a fire made of wood and cow-dung cakes. On the second day of ponggal celebration, ‘Thai Ponggal’ is celebrated by boiling fresh milk early in the morning and allowing it to boil over the vessel is a tradition that is the literal translation for ponggal and a special dish is cooked which is called ‘Sarkkarai Ponggal’. The special dish is offered to the Sun God with sugarcane sticks. The third day of ponggal is dedicated to cattle and is called ‘Mattu Ponggal’. For instance, multi-colored beads, tinkling bells, sheaves of corn and flower garlands are tied around the neck of the cattle. Thus, ‘Mattu Ponggal’ is days when cattle are given a well deserved day of rest and are given pride of place. Therefore, the farmers honor their cattle friends by celebrating it as a day of thanks giving to them. The fourth day is termed as ‘Kaanum Ponggal’. It is dedicated to the sun god, Surya and has its roots in ancient ‘Brahminical’ tradition because without the Sun, harvests will not be plentiful. This is because the Sun is the symbol of life on earth.

ONLINE DATABASES

3RD POSTING : THE IMPACT OF ICT ON SOCIETY

Hi guys…..Now, I come up again with more information in my third posting which we were assigned to go to Tun Sri Lanang (PTSL) and get information from online databases hosted at the Tun Sri Lanang Library. We were given five topics which we should choose one of it and find information about it from online databases such as EBSCO host, GEMA, LISA Net, NSTP e-media and SCOPUS. I went to Tun Sri Lanang Library and find information for the topic that I choose from online databases such as SCOPUS, EBSHOST and so on. The topic that I choose to find information from online databases is “The Impact of Using ICT on society”.
First and foremost, I would like to define my topic that is “The impact of using ICT on society”. The word “ICT” actually stands for “INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY”.
There are several advantages of ICT on society which provides online services such as online transactions, online shopping and online banking. At the same time, ICT gives great impacts on society such as employment issues, increased leisure time, changing working patterns, security and privacy of data, health and safety issues.
Firstly, I would like to explain about the positive impacts of ICT on society before I move on to the negative impact of ICT on society. ICT provides online services to society which we can use the Internet in many ways. It is very useful for finding out information. Therefore, there are different types of online services such as online transactions, online shopping and online banking.
Online transactions are now available in many ways. For an example, at local government level in the UK, people can pay their council tax, parking fines and many more items. There are other services which can be paid for at national level, such as car tax. Some of these services require payment online, such as applying for a tax disc online, booking a practical test online and so on. Many banking services called card payment gateway systems are now available.
Secondly, ICT also provides society to do online shopping which they no need to go out for shopping and spend more time on it. The first instance of companies allowing their customers to purchase products using the Internet is Pizza Hut which offered customers to order pizzas on its web page. An online can be called by other names such as Internet shop, web shop or online store. It is an electronic commerce (e-commerce) application that business can use with each other or they can offer services or goods directly to customer. Online shopping has become very popular for many reasons such as items are usually cheaper online, customers can compare products, customer can shop at a convenient time for them and so on.
Lastly, many customers are using online banking because of the convenience of banking at any time of day and the reduced amount of the time and fuel costs incurred when travelling to and from the bank. Online banking usually offers such features as up-to-date bank statements, bill payment, transfer of funds between the customer’s different accounts and loan applications.
Let’s move on to the negative impact of ICT on society. Firstly, let’s look at the employment issues. The introduction of online services has had two effects on employment. Some staff has lost their jobs because the use of ICT has replaced the need for some types of worker, for an example shop assistants and bank clerks. However, the other effect has been an increase in the need for workers in more technical aspects of work. There are many areas where the use of ICT in the fields of business and commerce has generally caused unemployment. For instance, many car workers have lost their jobs when car manufacturing companies have introduced the use of robots into factories.
Another impact of ICT on society is increased leisure time. The effect of the use of online services is to allow the possibility of workers working fewer hours. Many people think that the increased use of online services has caused a reduction in the number of hours employees are required to work. However, there is evidence to suggest that the use of ICT has not provided more leisure time.
Further more, the impact of ICT on society changing working patterns. ICT developments including the increased use of online services, has increased the amount of flexible working that organizations can offer their workers. Flexible working is any working pattern that can be decided by the employee and is not normal ‘8 to 5’ routine. In this selection, we will be looking at different types of flexible working such as part-time working, job sharing, flexible working hours, working from home and many more.
Apart from that, another impact of ICT on society is the security and privacy of data. When we talk about the confidentiality of personal data we mean that information should only seen by those people who are authorized to see it. Encryption is the main ICT technique used to ensure the confidentiality of data in online systems. To read an encrypted file requires a secret key or password that enables the person to decrypt it. Many banking systems do not consider that the use of a single password provides sufficient protection against the interception of data by hackers.
Lastly, ICT brings impact on society’s health and safety issues. In case of health, ICT will increase in repetitive strain injury. It is felt that the increased use of online services many have an effect on the degree of repetitive strain injury (RSI) that computer users will experience. The two most common RSI ailments experienced by computer users are Carpal tunnel syndrome, the name given to a condition causing pain in the forearm and wrist which affects women more than men. In case of safety, many safety problems are caused by the use of a large number of computers close to each other, as is particularly the case at online centers. This leads to a need for increased safety measures, against electrocution, fire and other dangers.
As a conclusion, the ICT has become very common nowadays. It brings both negative and positive impacts. For further information about the impact of using ICT on society access the following web sites. Thank you.

COMPUTER ASSISTED WRITING

2ND POSTING

Hi friends…see u all again in my second posting which we were required to search for computer assisted writing. In my understanding computer assisted writing is tools which help and develop student’s skills whether their writing is properly and grammatically written.

According to Eric Digest two factors contributing to the change in writing instruction have been the research investigating the way writing is taught and the computer. Research has found that most teachers are concerned with the final product of writing, but have little understanding of the process that successful writers use in creating that product (
Hansen, 1987; Harste et al., 1988). Traditionally, students have been asked to produce compositions on demand, with little guidance on how to work through the steps that quality writing requires.
Proponents of the various writing models endorse writing as an ongoing, multi-stage process, with equal emphasis given to each of the stages. But whether writing is taught by the process approach or by a traditional method, one of the barriers to producing good writers is that students must use pencil and paper to transcribe their thoughts and ideas. Many children are able to express thoughtful experiences, but have difficulty with handwriting; they labor over the first draft. To them, making revisions and recopying becomes an overwhelming burden. It is heartbreaking for a teacher to see a child, out of frustration and despair, tear up and throw away a composition because repeated erasures have made holes in the paper. The original enthusiasm the student had for the writing assignment may evaporate, and the student may approach the next assignment with anxiety and apprehension. Some writers, especially young writers, will make only those changes that do not require copying, regardless of how much the revision would improve their compositions.
Educational computing has undergone a change of focus regarding how the microcomputer should be used in language arts, and especially in writing (see
Cochran-Smith, 1991). No longer are computers seen as tutors and drillers. Instead, educators now are realizing that the computer is a tool for handling information. A word processor can become the centerpiece for an effective writing curriculum, encouraging early language production and providing students with opportunities to connect reading and writing. When integrating advanced technology into any curriculum, the teacher must always be aware that it cannot "eliminate" problems. But with instruction and support from the teacher and peers, most students can experience success in writing through the use of a word processor (Bright, 1990).

REVISING
As a tool for practice in writing, the word processor's usefulness is unparalleled. Writing researchers have long advised that the key to fluent writing is to write as much as possible. The key to exact writing is to revise repeatedly.
Newman (1984) discusses two important issues: the first is the relationship of recent research on learning to write to word processing. Newman says writing improves more "by experimenting with many aspects of the process at the same time" than by mastering separate skills and blending them. Word processing allows rapid alteration and manipulation of the text, helping writers sustain the mental images they are trying to capture while experimenting with language. The search/replace capability encourages synonym substitution, and the immediate access to a clean copy stimulates further language play.
Newman's second point is that there is a difference between using computers for drill and practice and using them for word processing. With drill and practice software, the computer is in charge--this software tells the user what to do and controls what is learned. With word processing, however, it is the learner who exerts control both in using the computer and learning to write.
The word processor was designed for revising and manipulating language. For inexperienced writers (who tend to make corrections at the word level), proofreading is easier on the computer. As writers become more experienced, they tend to make more complex changes. These "reorganizational" changes involve moving sentences and paragraphs around, reorganizing whole sections of articles, inserting new materials, and discarding writing that no longer fits or serves. Even a beginner can use the delete, strikeover, and insert functions to make simple changes. Later, with a brief period of practice, more complex changes, such as changing the order of the sections in a paper or adding passages written in another draft, can be made.
Ideally, free writing also can be done at the computer. This would encourage students to engage in learning and self-discovery rather than to focus upon the mechanics of exact writing. The word processor can release the writer from restraints that inhibit the free flow of words and ideas. Students can feel free to take risks in their writing because they see that they can always change their minds.

CLASSROOM PROBLEMS
Teachers can get around the typical problem of too few computers in the classroom by having children write on paper first. Then at the word processor, students can "fine-tune" their papers. Concepts presented in the first draft can be examined for clarity and sufficient elaboration. Additional information can be added, if necessary, to make ideas more concrete. Finally, the text can be checked for minor errors and punctuation.
Before word processing, this instructional model of writing was not implemented due to the amount of time involved in extensive rewriting or retyping. Most teachers and students were not convinced that the benefits of the revision process were worth the time-consuming mechanics of repeated writing. Students were often apprehensive of even beginning to put their thoughts down on paper because of the work and time involved in making corrections.
The word processor has helped realize the advantages offered in process writing. Rewriting and revising are allowed to be the cognitive processes they should be, rather than being dominated by the mechanical aspects of actually putting words down on paper. Students learn to approach their writing errors from a different point of view by struggling to understand what causes problem phrases, sentences, or paragraphs.
Besides revising and editing, another benefit of using a word processor is that multiple copies can be printed for reading in peer-editing groups. Final copies can be displayed on a writing bulletin board or in a collection of writings, without any student's work showing to a disadvantage because of poor handwriting. And the additional benefit to the student is having an audience other than the teacher.

TEACHER COMMITMENT
The word processor offers great advantages but also makes great demands. For effective use of the word processor: (1) the school must make a commitment to its use; and (2) the classroom teacher must make an even stronger commitment, since the teacher must invest a great deal of time in teaching students how to use it. Additionally, teachers must become familiar with the word processor themselves before using it in the classroom. Teachers must also decide when and how to give word processing instruction to their students.
If the entire class will use the word processor, the ideal situation would be to place the teacher at the front of a computer for whole-class instruction. However, a peer-tutoring system can also work. This requires a minimal investment of the teacher's classroom time, and it can be just as efficient. A peer system can be set up by showing just one group how to use the word processing program. Then have each of these students teach at least one other student word processing. Teach the commands as the students need them. A small group of students can learn quickly from the teacher, or they can use the tutorial that comes with some word processing programs for back-up.
In any case, the key is as much "hands-on" activity as possible. One does not learn to word process by listening to the teacher talk about it; one learns by doing it. If composition by computer is to become as natural an act for children as composition by handwriting, they must be allowed sufficient time to develop proficiency with the keyboard and with the specific word processing commands.
Teachers may be concerned with the fact that only one student at a time can use the word processor and printer. Many activities can be structured so as to allow "advisers" to work with the person typing. Researchers have described this "sharing" process as central to writing instruction. Working in a group helps make writing an interactive activity. Children receive immediate feedback from others, making them aware of the need for clarity and for expressing their ideas so that they can be understood by others. This interactive feedback is extremely helpful to writers engaged in revision. It also provides each writer with experience in helping others revise their writings.
Composition teachers have recognized that word processing is revolutionizing writing. Revision, long advocated but ignored by both teachers and students as too mechanical and painful, is now possible by pressing a few keys. However, computers do not change the central role of the teacher. If writing and revision can be made easier through effective writing instruction and word processing, then, hopefully, students will begin to write because they enjoy it rather than because they are forced to do so.

READING FOR INFORMATION

1ST POSTING

BREAST CANCER

Website which I found the reading for information is http://www.breastcancer.org/.

First of all, this website explains about breast cancer. This website breaking news about current breast cancer research. News articles are continually updated with reviews and commentary from breastcancer.org experts. Firstly, I get information from this website about the symptoms of breast cancer. Breast cancer symptoms vary widely — from lumps to swelling to skin changes — and many breast cancers have no obvious symptoms at all. Symptoms that are similar to those of breast cancer may be the result of non-cancerous conditions like infection or a cyst.

Secondly, this website also explains about the treatment that can be taken to cure breast cancer. Breast cancer treatment known as local/regional treatment. "Local" treatment refers to anything that is targeted to a specific area of the body—such as the breast, the lymph nodes, the lungs—as opposed to the whole body.

Lastly, I saw the pictures of breast cancer. There are many types of pictures such as pictures of Breast Self Exam, pictures of types of breast cancer, pictures of treatment, pictures of diagnosis, pictures of breast anatomy and pictures of reconstruction. First of all, pictures of breast self exams shows the diagrams of self examination followed by pictures of types of breast cancer shows pictures of Non–Invasive and Invasive tumors, and more.

As a conclusion, reading for information is very good because I as a girl learned more about the symptoms, treatments and pictures of breast cancer.

THE DESCRIPTION OF A GAME

During tutorial I have been ask to play any game which the lecture introduce to us. The games are Rosetta Stone, Code breaker, The lost secret, Navavo vacation, Double up, Hangman and Amazon Trail. So I took a game and begin to play which is the double up game. This game actually teaches me many new words and vocabulary. In my opinion I feel this kind of game usually suit the primary and secondary students who want to improve in their vocabulary and learn new words from it and this will help students in their school work. In addition this game also help us to learn text reconstruction. In this game we are required to fill in the blank with the correct word. Before we begin this came there is a table which gives us the meaning of the words that we use to fill in the blank. For an example, after I played this game I had learn many new vocabulary such as cynical, eccentric and indecisive. The beginning of the game is so easy but when it goes step by step it become more tough. What I say from this is that the computer not only makes our easy but also works as a tutor where it gives us practice and drills our vocabulary understanding.

JIGSAW READING

Website which I find the about the jigsaw reading is
http://www.holycross.edu/departments/economics/vmatheso/research/jigsaw.pdf

First of all in this website it explains the introduction of jigsaw reading. Jigsaw reading is an activity done in classroom to encourage students to well participates in learning. Students have been asked to select any articles which are relevant, read the article, write a summary of the article and prepare a short oral presentation. Then, they will form in small groups at the class and they have to present the main points of the articles to other students in their group. The jigsaw reading is a combines of reading comprehension, oral presentation and small group work as their assignment.

Then the website explains about the advantages of the jigsaw reading. Fist advantage is that the size of the classroom from 4-100. It is easier too control the less group of class because each and every presentation can be done on the some day. Second, the technique allows the students to minimum their class time by doing their presentation in a group. Third, jigsaw reading adds learning component where students can be done in classroom time when compared to presenting material through individual to the whole class. Forth, student can more concentrate to peer teacher compare to professor where the group is smaller. Finally, by doing the presentation students can more understanding about what they are presenting.

Now move to disadvantages. First, sometimes the students do not really understand on what they are going to say, they will sometimes give wrong information to groups and its makes other students confuse. Second, by personal experience where can leads to effectiveness the more time will be used for the single class? Let’s now look at the variations on the jigsaw reading. First, there are research papers which significant component which students make a small group to present. Next, includes presentations of group papers or projects. Finally, allow students to choose their own article on a specific topic.

In conclusion, jigsaw reading is an effective tool with which to promote active and effective learning.

CHARACTERISTICS OF ONLINE TEXTS

There are seven characteristics of online texts which are plasticity, links, tagging, searchers, templates, footprint and virtuality. To identify these characteristics we have been given this website and this work we have to do in pair work. The website which has been given to us to identify is www.esl.abt.com. When we open the website first of all we look for the plasticity characteristics and we found that in this website we can put, cut, paste and modify the information and this called plasticity where we can able copy the information in this web. Next, we found that there are many links in the website where we can find information through the links which found in the website. Then, we found tagging characteristics where when we type one single word for example hunt and it will give us all kind of meaning for the hunt words. Other than that the searches column is there in the website where we can search for other things on what we want to know. There many templates in this website. Furthermore, the footprints characteristics we can found from the history where it can show s us what website we had been access in two days back or two weeks back and so on. Finally, the virtuality characteristics where we can found in this website is that the student can go on forum if they have any question with teachers in this website.
